Scenic Routes for Cyclists in and around Monroe County, Indiana

Monroe County and surrounding counties offer enough options to keep any cyclist happy. The roads traverse beautiful rolling countryside and provide access to lakes, state forests and the Hoosier National Forest. Good options are available for both road and off-road riding.

Favorite routes on paved roads in and around Monroe County

We consider the roads in and around Monroe County wonderful for bicyclists, but others consider them great for motorcycles, would-be stock- and sports car racers, boat trailers, horse trailers, and so on. Very few of the roads in and around Monroe County have been designated as official bicycle routes. Frankly speaking, the city and the county have some work to do before these roads can compete for the title of bicycle friendly. There are some people working to improve the situation; find out about some of their efforts through the Indiana Bicycle Coalition and The Bicycle Lobby.

A package of maps containing some of the routes below and many more is available free to BBC members and is available for purchase by the general public at local bike shops. All routes begin at the Bryan Park pool parking lot on Woodlawn Avenue in Bloomington.

Off-road riders should also consider a visit to Gnawbone Camp on State Route 135, two miles south of State Road 46, near Nashville, Indiana. For a modest fee, you can ride on their well-maintained trails, which cross 1,400 acres of Brown County hills. Call 812.988.4852 for more information.

The Bloomington Bicycle Club bears no responsibility for the safety of riders who may use the routes we suggest. We urge you to wear a helmet, to watch for traffic, and to avoid riding alone. Keep an eye out for dogs and deer too. Before you let your wheels sing on a fast descent, think about your options if a deer should leap out from the woods. Believe us, we've seen it...
